Marc VDS set to become Yamaha satellite team

Marc VDS could be set to switch from Honda bikes to Yamaha in 2019.

The Belgian factory have used Honda’s since joining MotoGP in 2015, however they are not happy with their current relationship. With Tech3 switching to KTM for next season, Yamaha currently don’t have a satellite team next year.

This has made Marc VDS switch to Yamaha a possibility. The Ducati satellite teams of Avintia and Angel Nieto also expressed an interest in Yamaha.

Marc VDS have publicly raised concerns about their relationship with Honda in the past. With Honda strengthening ties with LCR, Marc VDS are looking at other options. They held talks with Suzuki about becoming their satellite team, however they seem reluctant to provide four bikes for the grid.

Yamaha and VR46

Yamaha and the VR46 company have a relationship in a number of areas and this could prove beneficial in negotiations. VR46 Academy rider Franco Morbidelli joined Marc VDS for this season, and Yamaha revealed that there had been interest in Morbidelli for this season. Yamaha have an agreement in place to contract a VR46 rider at the right time, anda close working relationship with Marc VDS could pave the way for them to become a satellite team.

Speaking in Qatar last week, Yamaha Managing Director Lin Jarvis said:

We have a relationship with VR46 Academy. We analyse the market in general, but we have this agreement with the VR46 structure and the idea is to have one of its riders with us at the proper time. A good example of that is Morbidelli: we had the chance and we were really interested in him. But at that moment, Jonas Folger and Johann Zarco had already signed their contracts with Tech3, and Rossi and Vinales had signed with us. We didn’t have a bike for him.
