iHafizh Syahrin will compete as the second rider for Tech3 at next week’s test in Buriram, Thailand.
The Malaysian rider is linked with being the replacement for Jonas Folger and will join the team for the second pre-season test.
This speculation only intensified by the announcement that Syahrin is to leave his Moto2 team. His replacement in the Petronas Sprinta Racing Team will be Zulfahmi Khairuddin.
Tech3 have previously stated that they were reluctant to approach a rider who was under contract for the 2018 season. However, if a replacement was available and the deal was amicable then they would consider such a thing.
Whilst not one of the most prominent Moto2 riders, Syahrin has been on the podium three times. He has regularly finished in the top ten of the overall standings ahead of riders such as Mattia Pasini, Dominique Aegerter amongst others. A wet weather specialist, he may surprise a few people if he was to step up to the premier class.
Khairuddin returns to the paddock
With Khairuddin being announced as the Moto2 rider for the Petronas Sprinta Racing Team, this means that Syahrin is free to join another team.
Khairuddin has been competing in the World Supersport championship for the past two seasons. However, he has six years experience in the 125cc/Moto3 class so is no stranger to the paddock. He also has knowledge of the tracks which will help him as he adjusts to the Moto2 bike.
