Yamaha riders Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi led the way on day 2 of the first pre-season test in Sepang, finishing ahead of the field.
Vinales posted the fastest time of 1:59.355 to lead Rossi by 0.035. Crutchlow finished third with a fastest time of 1:59.443.
Twelve riders in total finished with sub two minute times as many riders pushed for a fast time at the end of the day. Vinales finished top of the timesheets after finishing 13th on day one. The first day was about race pace, and not a fast time over a single lap.
Wet weather in the morning meant there was no-one track for the first hour. Pol Espargaro led the eay early on when riders took to the track. Various riders went quickest throughout the day, including Jack Miller and Andrea Dovizioso. Valentino Rossi posted the first sub two minute time of the day.
Sepang is the traditional first stop of the pre-season testing schedule and many teams were testing their new aero packages, including Honda who’s aero fairing which made it’s debut. Marc Marquez posted the 7th fastest time, with team-mate Dani Pedrosa dropping to 12th, after being quickest on day one. Cal Crutchlow was also testing the new Honda fairing on his LCR team bike. Yamaha also continued to test there aerodynamic fairing, which teams are developing ahead of the first race in Qatar where final designs must be submitted.
With half an hour of time left in the session, a number of riders put in quick lap times to improve their position. Crutchlow, Lorenzo and Dovizioso all posted impressive times, before Vinales went quickest 11 minutes from the end.
Jack Miller impressed on the Alma Pramac Ducati bike as he ended the day in fifth place, just 0.011s behind Jorge Lorenzo. Johann Zarco was sixth overall, ahead of Marquez, Dovizioso and top Suzuki rider Andrea Iannone in 10th.
