Valentino Rossi left Sepang admitting he is worrying about the test, after a disappointing final day.
The Italian set the eighth fastest time of the day, down on his second place on Monday.
He admits to being puzzled by this after having the same setup, tyres and track time and losing time.
After topping the timesheets on Monday, Yamaha were optimistic for the final day but left disappointed. What’s worrying the riders is that a similar thing happened at the post season test in Valencia last November. There they had different outcomes on the same setup. Both Rossi and Vinales had wildly different days using the same bike and tyres.
Rossi was hoping for an improvement in lap times on the final day, but was unable to get close to Lorenzo’s record time set in the morning.
Good feeling for Vinales
Team-mate Maverick Vinales also suffered the same issue with inconsistent performance. He did however improve his feeling with the bike, and his overall pace. Whilst disappointed to finish in 18th place, overall he is happy with the test.
With the next test scheduled for Buriram on February 16th, it will be interesting to see if Yamaha can provide a solution for the inconsistencies. Certainly, not having the answer leaves them in a difficult position.
Speaking after the test, Rossi said:
Today was a bit more difficult, we struggled a little bit more from the morning with the grip, it was a bit more difficult to ride the bike on the limit. Yesterday night I was optimistic to improve the laptime, but it was impossible, a bit more difficult – especially with the new tyre, because with the used tyre my pace was good. We are a little bit worried, we need to understand why, because in Valencia test after the last race happen exactly the same.
