Alex Marquez has said he is “motivated” to joing MotoGP in 2019 after testing the Marc VDS MotoGP bike in a two day test in place of MotoGP rookie Tom Luthi.
The Spanish rider was drafted in for the private test at Jerez as Luthi is still recovering from the broken ankle which ruled him out of his last two Moto2 races.
The test wa originally planned for Luthi and his crew, who are also new to the team, to become more familiar with the bike and give the mechanics experience of working on the bike and for setup purposes, and with Luthi unable to participate Marquez was drafted in so that the crew could still gain experience in the absence of the rider. It afforded Marquz some track time on a MotoGP bike alongside former Moto2 team-mate and world champion Franco Morbidelli.
An impressive showing in the presence of team management and brother Marc has left the younger Marquez brother excited for next season in Moto2 where he hopes his performances next year will lead to a MotoGP ride in 2019. He finished 4th in the standings in 2017 behind Morbidelli, Luthi and Miguel Oliveira.
In the end it’s a motivation for me to have this experience, to try and win in Moto2 and to try and move to MotoGP in 2019. But now I need to focus on the winter and the first test with Moto2. I’ll have to forget a little bit this experience that was really nice.
