Enea Bastianini finished the Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana with a solid fifth place finish, which was enough to see young Italian finish the world championship in third place overall.
The young rider from Rimini has enjoyed an excellent season, with the undoubted highlight being his stunning victory at his home race in Misano which saw him finish with a total of 207 points for the season overall, just 53 points behind world champion Danny Kent.
Speaking after the race, Bastianini said:
I’m very pleased to have maintained the third position in the Championship, it is a major achievement that makes me happy! Early in the race unfortunately I had some difficulty because the bike was moving a lot on corner entry, then the situation has improved and in the last six or seven laps I was able to get a good rhythm. I catched McPhee and I wanted to try to reach the other two guys in front of me, Binder and Kornfeil, but it was not possible. I would have liked to finish the season on the podium, but that’s okay, fifth place satisfies me.
His team boss was obviously delighted with his young star’s performances this season, adding:
The third place in the championship is a great achievement, it’s nice to be on the podium! It must be said that at some point in the season we also had the illusion of being able to fight for the title, but we are satisfied anyway: we know we have a great potential and we will try to improve again ahead of the next season, in which we want to be even more competitive. This year we have learned so many things and the assessment is absolutely positive, so I would like to thank Enea and also the team that supported him in the best way.
There was also a solid performance for Fabio di Giannantonio on his world championship debut as he replaced the injured Andrea Locatelli for the final race of the season. After spending the previous two days getting familiar with the bike and team he was able to finish the race in 23rd position.
Di Giannantonio thoroughly enjoyed his world championship debut, saying:
Fighting with World Championship riders is exciting! You can’t relax for a moment, otherwise they overtake you immediately! At the beginning I had a good start, then I lost a bit of ground also because of some contact; then I tried to catch the riders in front of me, but I was already too far so in the end I just tried to keep the position. It was a long race and I struggled a bit, because I’m not used to it, also mentally. I will work a lot this winter to get prepared for 2016! I’m delighted to have taken part at this race, I thank the whole team which did an outstanding job and Fausto for giving me this opportunity.
Fausto Gresini was also impressed with the debut, adding:
Di Giannantonio enjoyed a good debut on a demanding track: the World Championship is not easy for a rookie, but Fabio faced difficulties with great enthusiasm and this is undoubtedly positive. I’m happy for him.
